چکیده

The distinction between informational and computational equivalence of representations, rst articulated by Larkin and Simon (1987) has been a fundamental principle in the analysis of diagrammatic reasoning which has been supported empirically on numerous occasions. We present an experiment that investigates this principle in relation to the performance of expert graph users of 2 × 2 ‘interaction’ bar and line graphs. The study sought to determine whether expert interpretation is a ected by graph format in the same way that novice interpretations are. The ndings revealed that, unlike novices—and contrary to the assumptions of several graph comprehension models—experts’ performance was the same for both graph formats, with their interpretation of bar graphs being no worse than that for line graphs. We discuss the implications of the study for guidelines for presenting such data and for models of expert graph comprehension.

Bar 1-Visibility Drawings of 1-Planar Graphs

A bar 1-visibility drawing of a graph G is a drawing of G where each vertex is drawn as a horizontal line segment called a bar, each edge is drawn as a vertical line segment where the vertical line segment representing an edge must connect the horizontal line segments representing the end vertices and a vertical line segment corresponding to an edge intersects at most one bar which is not an en...

Differences in Comprehensibility Between Three-Variable Bar and Line Graphs

We report an experiment investigating graph comprehension. Verbal protocol data were collected while participants attempted to understand six bar or line graphs representing relationships between three variables. Analysis of the verbal protocols revealed significant differences in the level of comprehension between the two graph types. Specifically, a significant proportion of line graph users ...

More directions in visibility graphs

In this paper we introduce unit bar k-visibility graphs, which are bar kvisibility graphs in which every bar has unit length. We show that almost all families of unit bar k-visibility graphs and unit bar k-visibility graphs are incomparable under set inclusion. In addition, we establish the largest complete graph that is a unit bar k-visibility graph. As well, we present a family of hyperbox vi...

Bar and Line Graph Comprehension: An Interaction of Top-Down and Bottom-Up Processes

This experiment investigated the effect of format (line vs. bar), viewers' familiarity with variables, and viewers' graphicacy (graphical literacy) skills on the comprehension of multivariate (three variable) data presented in graphs. Fifty-five undergraduates provided written descriptions of data for a set of 14 line or bar graphs, half of which depicted variables familiar to the population an...

Bar k-Visibility Graphs: Bounds on the Number of Edges, Chromatic Number, and Thickness

Let S be a set of horizontal line segments, or bars, in the plane. We say that G is a bar visibility graph, and S its bar visibility representation, if there exists a one-to-one correspondence between vertices of G and bars in S, such that there is an edge between two vertices in G if and only if there exists an unobstructed vertical line of sight between their corresponding bars. If bars are a...

D-Spectrum and D-Energy of Complements of Iterated Line Graphs of Regular Graphs

The D-eigenvalues {µ1,…,µp} of a graph G are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix D and form its D-spectrum. The D-energy, ED(G) of G is given by ED (G) =∑i=1p |µi|. Two non cospectral graphs with respect to D are said to be D-equi energetic if they have the same D-energy. In this paper we show that if G is an r-regular graph on p vertices with 2r ≤ p - 1, then the complements of iterated lin...
